2008 Cookie Sale

The

Story

of

Jack

On February 26, 2008 our Girl Scout Troop #134 was doing a bake sale at Russ’s Market on 70th and Van Dorn. We were in the store from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. selling cookies.  About 10:30 a.m., a gentleman approached our sale and our girls offered him some cookies.  He declined but asked if he could make a donation.  He opened his wallet and asked the girls, “How much?” The girls responded with, “Whatever you are willing to give is fine.”  He handed them a $20 bill. We thanked him for his support and he went to have breakfast at the café in the store. About half an hour later, one of our girls was staring at the flowers, and the same gentleman returned and asked her, “Oh honey, have you sold enough cookies?” She responded that yes, we had sold 78 boxes. He said, “Let me go get you a check.” He walked to the bank in the store and returned to our booth with a $100 check.  We were amazed and in shock and tried to get him to take some cookies. We thanked him, but he refused to take any cookies. He left the store and we continued our sale. At 11:30 a.m., we prayed for a “Clean Sweep”, that all our cookies would sell to encourage the girls in all their hard work. At 12:15 p.m., the same gentleman returned to our sale. He asked, “If I buy you out right now, will you take the cookies to Cedars Home on Pioneers Blvd.?” After catching our breath, we agreed and started to count our cookies that were left. He then said, “I want all of them, even if you have some in your car.” Our troop leader responded with, “Oh no, you don’t have to because we have picked up enough cookies for two bake sales.” He then said, “I want them all!” We thanked him and loaded up the cookies. There were a total of 147 boxes for $514.50. He wrote us a check and we asked him if we could send him a thank you. He said, “I would like that!” He smiled and walked off. We didn’t see him again. We delivered the cookies to Cedars Home for Children, and told the staff that they were anonymously donated and we were just the delivery drivers. What an amazing image of selflessness and generosity that our troop was able to witness and be a part of. We were so grateful for the sale, but even more grateful that the children of Cedars Home would be blessed by this donation!
